Our History
For approximately a decade IDR has provided educational workshops and research on anti-racism in Forsyth County, NC. Our approach to anti-racism promotes peace, understanding, and intellectual dialogue. Our recent workshops with the City of Winston-Salem averaged 4.5 out of 5 on participant evaluations. Our history of work in the community we have developed trust. This is evident by our work with partners such as Wake Forest University, the Hispanic League, the YWCA, Mary Reynolds Babcock, Winston Salem State University, Green Street United Methodist Church, Crossroads, the United Way, Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, Peace Haven Baptist Church and many other organizations. We have a multiracial and multi-ethnic board that works well together.
Due to our history of coalition building we have been able to develop contracting relationships with scholars and consultants that offer in-kind services and reduced speaking fees through our partnerships. The consultants who have agreed to train include: Amaris Carr, Christy Clore, Kelly Carpenter, Lisa Schwartz and J Nelson Weaver. Our team of researcher include: Dr. Ed Bell, Dr. Russell Smith, Dr. Gima Dennis, and Dr. Derrick Drakeford. Through this Freedom Tree project we are strategically maximizing these partnerships to bring high quality training to individuals, corporations, and nonprofits. The secretary of state of North Carolina reports that there are 4,268 nonprofits registered in Forsyth County, NC. Many of these are legally registered but lack the capacity to make measured impacts in our local community. The Freedom Tree project will connect small nonprofits with experts in: program development, strategic partnerships, sustainability, fundraising, board development, etc. Additionally we partner with Purpose University to help 50 young adults start businesses. Many of whom will be African-American, Hispanic, and from low-income families.
